Our Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Treatment

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy harnesses the healing properties of a patient's own blood. Platelets are vital for initiating the healing process after an injury. In PRP therapy, blood is processed using an FDA-approved device to concentrate the platelets and separate them from other blood components like red and white blood cells.

PRP treatments have been used for over 40 years, initially for healing chest wounds after heart surgery. It wasn’t until around 2004 that PRP began to be used in orthopedics, thanks to the development of FDA-approved devices for blood processing and portable ultrasound units for precise placement of PRP into injured tissues.

Today, PRP is popular among athletes seeking faster recovery from injuries. Notable users include Kobe Bryant, Tiger Woods, and Troy Polamalu.

PRP treatments can activate a "hyper-healing" response for injuries and conditions that resist healing and cause pain. In these cases, the body's natural healing process may not be delivering enough platelets needed for effective tissue repair, often due to factors like overuse, age, or severe injury.

By concentrating your platelets up to 10 times the normal level, PRP therapy can dramatically enhance the healing response in an affected area. More platelets lead to greater and faster healing, helping effectively repair the injured tissue.

Benefits of PRP for Pain Management

High Success Rate PRP therapy is generally known to have an 80% success rate in healing chronic muscle, tendon, and ligament pain.
Non-Invasive Alternative Offers a conservative approach to avoid the risks associated with surgery.
Faster Healing PRP treatments have great potential to heal injuries and certain conditions faster with little to no downtime compared to surgery.
Ethical and Low-risk Uses the patient's own cells, eliminating the risks of infections, allergic reactions, and immune rejection associated with donor tissue.
Long-Term Relief PRP treatments can offer long-term, and often permanent, pain resolution for specific conditions.
Versatile Treatment PRP is known as an effective treatment for many soft tissue injuries or diseases, including tendon, ligament, and fascia injuries. It can also help nerve entrapments like carpal tunnel syndrome and other non-healing soft injuries and diseases.

PRP Treatment Procedure Overview

01.
Blood Draw We extract 60-120 ml of blood from your arm, as with a regular diagnostic blood draw.
02.
Platelet Concentration Your blood is placed in a sterile, FDA-approved device to concentrate platelets and separate them from red and white blood cells.
03.
Preparation After around 20 minutes, the Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injection is ready to be administered.
04.
Numbing the Area The treatment area is thoroughly numbed with a local anesthetic before the injection.
05.
Precise Injection The PRP is then injected into the treatment area under ultrasound or real-time X-ray to ensure precise placement.
06.
Post-Treatment Instructions Your physician will review post-treatment instructions with you. We typically advise our patients to take it easy for a few days—to stay mobile but not too active.
07.
Results Significant pain relief can be noticed in the treated area as quickly as two weeks after the procedure.
08.
Follow-Up Around eight weeks after the treatment, your physician will call to check on your progress and discuss the next steps.

“Nine months after the PRP procedure for a rotator cuff tear, I am pain-free and have the full range of motion in my shoulder. No downtime/no sling and I was able to return to the gym two days after the injections. Would I do PRP again? ABSOLUTELY! Why would I not use my body’s own cells to heal an injury? No reason!”

“My greatest thanks for all you have done for me. I am a journeyman electrician who does a lot of overhead work, pole climbing, and pulling of cable—so I use my shoulder all day. After 2 years of left shoulder pain, I underwent an arthroscopic surgery which gave me no relief. After PRP 3 months ago, I am almost pain-free and am finally getting my life back! Thanks.”
